Fig. 1. Recently identified cargoes for kinesins are built according to a common
design plan. With the exception of the transmembrane protein APP, kinesins are
linked to cytosolic scaffold proteins that have multiple binding sites for
other proteins, including a transmembrane protein that defines the cargo.
Kinesin tails and transmembrane receptors are connected to the linkers by
modular protein-protein interactions. A large fraction of the linkers
discovered thus far are scaffold proteins for signaling pathways.
