A flat surface of a freeze-fractured E face of a nerve terminal plasma membrane was labelled by anti-VATPase-c-subunit antibodies. Gold particles (15 nm, arrows) are preferentially associated with large intramembrane particles that correspond to large intramembrane proteins (arrowheads).
