P2 : a behavioural mutant of Dictyostelium discoideum

The amoeba strain P2 was incorrectly identified as a mutant of the slime mould, Dictyostelium discoideum. I have been unable to repeat the reported observation of a karyotype of seven chromosomes, on which the original identification was based. Other properties, including the morphology of cysts and nucleoli, growth properties and cell shape, indicate that P2 is a hartmanellid amoeba.

I am indebted to Professor Kenneth Raper of the University of Wisconsin for pointing out the correct identification of this strain.
