Tooth development is a good example of a morphogenetic process driven by interactions between ectoderm and underlying mesenchyme. The two tissues release numerous paracrine signalling molecules, which in turn regulate expression of a host of transcription factors that define the developmental stage of the target tissue. In Cell Science at a Glance, Irma Thesleff surveys the various genes involved, the stages at which they act and the developmental changes that occur as a consequence (see p. 1647 + poster).
