Metalloproteinases - the matrix remodelled
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) facilitate tissue remodelling by degrading components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). They can also release growth factors and bioactive ECM fragments in this way, as well as process cell surface molecules such as growth factor receptors and adhesion molecules. In Cell Science at a Glance (see p. 4016 + poster), Meng-Huee Lee and Gillian Murphy survey the >20 different members of the MMP family, providing their domain structures and information about their localization, regulation and functions.
