It is with a real sense of sadness that I announce the resignation of Gary Borisy as an Editor of Journal of Cell Science. Gary was appointed in 1988 by my predecessor, Bill Grimstone. Although I was already familiar with Gary's research, one of the first things I did when I became Editor-in-Chief in 1992 was to visit him in his laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. I remember that visit very well. I was deeply impressed with Gary's commitment to the journal, his thoughts about how the journal should evolve, and how he managed to handle a large flow of manuscripts with minimal secretarial assistance.

Over the years we built up a very comfortable working relationship. Like all the other Editors, we have had to fit our work for the journal around running our own laboratories and so we would communicate rather infrequently, meeting up once or twice a year at JCS editorial board meetings. However, Gary could always be relied on for wise advice and we would work closely together when problems arose. The past ten years have been a time of tremendous change for the journal. We have had to tackle centralised manuscript handling, online submissions and electronic publication, not to mention the logistics of coping with the growing popularity of the journal. As our impact factor has increased, so has the number of manuscripts submitted, and the number submitted in 2003 is three times greater than in 1991.
Gary was a calm, insightful Editor and in particular foresaw the major developments in light microscopy that have transformed cell biology in recent years. He bent over backwards to be fair to authors, while rigorously pursing our mission to increase the quality of the papers we publish. Gary even managed to bump into Caveman and introduce him to the idea of contributing to JCS.
While I am sorry that Gary will no longer be part of my team of Editors, I am delighted that he has agreed to remain on the editorial board. I am also pleased to announce that James Nelson is returning to JCS as an Editor. Gary and James may be very different people, but both are guaranteed to keep me on my toes.
