F-Actin in cells from low- and high-density cultures (log and early stationary phase) was visualized by fluorescent microscopy using rhodamine-phalloidin. In wild-type cells during log phase, actin patches polarize to areas of new cell growth (A) but, in ${Delta}$ end3 (C) and sla1 ${Delta}$ 118-511 (E) cells, cortical patches (while still polarized) were larger and less numerous. During early stationary phase, actin patches become depolarized and numerous in wild-type cells (B), and large F-actin aggregates were observed in a small proportion (<5%) of cells (arrowhead). By contrast, ${Delta}$ end3 (D) and sla1 ${Delta}$ 118-511 (F) F-actin appears as large aggregates in most (>95%) cells. Bar, 10 µm.
