Fig. S1. High
frequency stimulation (HFS)-induced membrane currents and depolarisations in
GluT and GluR cells. HFS (100 Hz) was applied for 1 second to the Schaffer
collateral fibers. The stimulation period is indicated by grey boxes. (A)
Analysis of a GluT cell (Vrest=–78 mV, Ri=5.2 MV, Cm=85 pF, A1).
The current pattern (A1) was evoked according to the protocol given
in Fig. 2. During HFS, membrane potentials or currents (lower traces) and
extracellular field potentials (upper traces) were simultaneously recorded. (A2)
The GluT cell was depolarised by about 20 mV and repolarized mono-exponentially
(t=6.21 seconds). (A3)
The corresponding membrane currents amounted to 587 pA and decayed with t=6.86 seconds (B) Analysis of a
GluR cell (Vrest=–84 mV, Ri=89 MV, Cm=29 pF, B1). (B1)
gives the current pattern of the cell. (B2) HFS led to a
depolarisation by 79.3 mV (from –83.9 to –4.5 mV). In contrast to the GluT
cell, the membrane repolarized bi-exponentially (t1=0.6
seconds, 77%; t2=6.37
seconds, 23%). (B3) In the voltage clamp mode (–80 mV), inward
currents of 280 pA were induced (t1=0.6
seconds, 69%; t2=5.02
seconds, 31%). (C) For comparison, the HFS-induced whole cell responses of (A)
and (B) were superimposed.

Fig. S2. Variable
current patterns of GluR cells receiving GABAergic synaptic input. Whole cell
currents were evoked as described in the legend to Fig. 2A. All cells were
weakly EGFP-positive and were located in the stratum radiatum of the CA1
subfield of p9 mice. All cells showed at least GABAergic synaptic input. (A)
Typical innervated GluR cell (Ri=137 MV, Vrest=–85 mV, Cm=32 pF).
(B) Characteristic components of the whole cell current pattern are given at
higher resolution. (C) Whole cell current profiles of different GluR cells
(scaling similar to A) displaying variable inward rectification and outward
current amplitudes. The cell size did not correlate with the current pattern
