New JCS Editors

We are delighted to announce the appointment of three new Editors of Journal of Cell Science: Francis Barr, Arnoud Sonnenberg and Michael Way. Francis Barr is currently an independent group leader at the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry near Munich. His research career started at the EMBL in Heidelberg, where he obtained his PhD in 1992. Francis then joined Graham Warren's group at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London (now CRUK London Research Institute) to pursue postdoctoral studies on the structure and regulation of the Golgi apparatus. Since establishing his own group in Munich, he has focused his research on the regulation of membrane traffic at the Golgi during interphase and mitosis, and signalling from the cytoskeleton to membranes during cytokinesis.

Arnoud Sonnenberg trained in several laboratories, including the Salk Institute and the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, before obtaining his PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 1990. Subsequently, he joined the Division of Cell Biology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, where he became head of division in 2003. A major focus of his research has been the structure and function of laminin-binding integrins. His recent work has concentrated on the pathways that control the assembly and disassembly of hemidesmosomes.

Michael Way heads the Cell Motility Group at the CRUK London Research Institute. His research career began at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he obtained a PhD in 1989 and stayed on as a post-doctoral fellow. In 1992, he moved to the Whitehead Institute in Boston to continue working on actin-binding proteins with Paul Matsudaira. Three years later, he returned to Europe to start his own group in the Cell Biology Programme at the EMBL, before joining the London Research Institute in 2001. His work focuses on the control of the actin cytoskeleton and has been pivotal in establishing vaccinia virus as a tool for investigating cell signalling, cytoskeletal dynamics and cell motility. We are sorry to announce that Rick Assoian is stepping down as an Editor of JCS. Rick has worked tirelessly as an Editor over the past four years and will be sorely missed. He will, however, remain an active member of our Editorial Board and continue to support the journal in that role.
