Lipid rafts are liquid-ordered regions of the membrane that are rich in cholesterol and sphingolipids. They are thought to represent membrane microdomains that contain specific sets of membrane proteins and are implicated in a variety of cellular process, including membrane trafficking and signalling. In Cell Science at a Glance (see p. 1099 + poster), Lawrence Rajendran and Kai Simons survey the different roles of these rafts from endocytosis to virus budding and chart their trafficking routes around the cell.
