Matthews, K. R. (2005). The developmental cell biology of Trypanosoma brucei. J. Cell Sci. 118, 283-290.
In the paper above it is stated that GPEET procyclin is essential in procyclic forms. The author would like to add that null mutants lacking all procyclin genes can be eventually selected after 2 months adaptation in culture (see Vassella et al., 2003).
Vassella, E., Butikofer, P., Engstler, M., Jelk, J. and Roditi, I. (2003). Procyclin null mutants of Trypanosoma brucei express free glycosylphosphatidylinositols on their surface. Mol. Biol. Cell 14, 1308-1318.
