We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Tamotsu Yoshimori, Ph.D., as an Editor of Journal of Cell Science. Tamotsu studied at Osaka University, earning his Ph.D. in Medical Science. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the cell biology programme at the EMBL in Germany before returning to professorships in Japan, and he is currently a Professor of Genetics at the Graduate School of Medicine and a Professor of Intracellular Membrane Dynamics at the Graduate School of Frontier Bioscience, Osaka University.
Tamotsu has edited two books and authored or co-authored over 220 journal articles and book chapters. He is on the editorial board of a number of renowned journals, is a member of Faculty of 1000 and sits on the executive committees for a number of societies. He has received numerous honours, including the Osaka University Presidential Award for Achievement in 2012 and 2013, Roche Distinguished Lecturer 2012, and prizes for Science and Technology in the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology 2013.
Tamotsu's research interests are focused on intracellular membrane trafficking and, particularly for the past 16 years, autophagy. He identified LC3 as an autophagosome-binding protein, and this protein is widely used as the gold standard in autophagy assays (the paper has been cited over 2000 times). His group has also provided new insights into the molecular mechanisms of membrane dynamics and biogenesis in autophagy, and the role of autophagy in pathogen defence.
Those who know Tamotsu know of his great fondness for ducks. To celebrate his becoming a JCS Editor, therefore, we have featured a duck on our cover. We are very pleased to welcome Tamotsu to Journal of Cell Science as our first Japanese Editor, and look forward to working with him.
